The very first night my team and I held a church service under the bridge on the streets of Houston, started the journey of many exciting experiences. One of the firsts of which I will never forget.
Our order and strategy was simple. Sing a few songs, preach a simple gospel message. Pray with people and then eat.
We had finished the worship set. I had only been speaking for about 5 minutes when a tall slender man, whom I later found out was named Robert, came walking right up through the crowd and down the aisle in between the chairs to the very front.
Many things went through my mind as I watched him approach. Did he want to get saved? This was my most optimistic thought! Did he want to be first in line to eat? This was possibly more realistic! Did he just want to see and hear better? I wasn’t sure. But he and I had a staring contest as I continued to preach. He folded his arms as if to say, “What in the ____ are you doing here?” He tilted his head, checked me out, up and down. Then he just froze until I finished my message.
As soon as I finished, gave the altar call and prayed with those who responded, Robert walked up to me and said, “I like what you’re doing.”
Robert became my head usher/bodyguard for Street Church. It wasn’t until about two years later that I found out what really happened that night.
Robert was the leader of that particular turf gang. He heard the music, saw the crowd and knew he had not given permission for us to be there. He actually came to the service that night to shoot me. But when he walked to the front of the crowd, he said, he was physically paralyzed and unable to move. He listened to every word and God spoke to him that night and told him what we were doing was good and he was to help us. So he did.
The word of the day is anointing. There was an anointing on us to do that ministry. God protects His anointed.
Ask God to anoint your marriage, your family, your business and your life.
Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.”
