It was Thanksgiving with the family. We were playing basketball and playing catch with the football. My son threw the football to me as I ran across the gym. Just as I was about to catch it, someone (whom will remain nameless) reached out and deflected the pass, just slightly. Slightly enough to cause it to jam into my finger and leave my finger broken in two places. Are you kidding me? I’m 54 years old. I’ve played sports my entire life and have never broken a bone. I guess there’s a first time for everything.
But I have learned some lessons while having a broken finger and wearing this splint on the index finger of my left hand.
- When you miss the target even just a few degrees it can do great harm. Work extremely hard to stay focused on your goals and hit them every time.
- Little things make a big difference. You may not realize how much you utilize little things until it is taped in a splint and you are unable to even use it to type this simple message.
- Little things are vital for daily effectiveness. Every day I have needed the use of my finger. It is a small part of my body and only one of ten fingers, but it is so vital.
- Little things can distract you from the more important things. I have had to make multiple trips to the doctor. I have had to explain this injury dozens of times. I have been slower at completing my responsibilities, all because of this injury to “one” finger.
- Sometimes the healing process is painful.
- Sometimes the healing process takes longer than you want.
- Your injuries and your scars give you immediate access and entrance into some people’s lives. It’s amazing how an injury causes people to engage and interact with you.
Romans 8:28 “God works all things together for good.”
The word of the day is broken. God can take broken things and use it for His glory.
