It was the month of June in the summer of 1978. I was sixteen years old, standing on a ladder, painting my grandparent’s house in East Texas. In between fighting the wasps that were coming from the attic of that old house and fighting the Texas summer heat, I was fighting a spiritual battle.
I wasn’t even fully aware of the spiritual battle I was in. But I knew I wasn’t happy. I wasn’t right with God. My brother was playing an 8-track of Dallas Holm. I know that dates me big time. Some of you reading this have never heard of an 8-track player. Ha! Oh well. It is what is. Dallas was singing a song titled “Come Unto Jesus.” It was a live recording. In the middle of the song, Dallas invites listeners to give their lives to Jesus. I felt like God was speaking to me through that song. I felt God challenging me to surrender to Him right there at that moment.
You mean here? Can we do this? Is it legit? Will it really count? Because if I am going to surrender, it has to count. There’s no altar. There’s no preacher. There’s no organ music. But there was God. That’s all that mattered.
I can still remember that day when I gave my life to God. I invited Jesus into my heart. I asked him to wash my sins away and be the Lord of my life. At that moment I experienced New Life, Abundant life, and Eternal life. These terms can all mean one in the same, but they can also be distinctly different from one another.
The word of the day is abundant.
John 10:10 (ESV) says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”
Abundantly, simply means, “More than enough.”
I love this word. Abundantly. I love it because it really does express what I have experienced since serving Jesus Christ. More than enough.
