High or Low Expectations?

ExpectationExpectation is the word of the day. I want you to establish proper expectations for yourself and your dreams and goals today.

Someone once told my wife, Starla and I, that they wanted to take us to a very special restaurant. (I will leave unnamed) They said, “It will change your life.” Obviously they were big fans. So Starla and I went with high expectations. After we left the restaurant, Starla looked at me and asked, “Did it change your life? I said, “No, did it change yours?” She answered, “No.” Wow, how frustrating that we missed out on the opportunity to have our lives changed. The truth was, our expectations were just too high. It was a nice restaurant, but I don’t think I’ve been to any restaurant that has changed my life. That honor is reserved for Mom’s home cooking. Get I get an Amen?

William Shakespeare said, “Expectation is the root of all heartache.”

How many times have we been disappointed and hurt because our expectations were not met? Some would argue, that for this reason alone, you should lower your expectation so that you will never be disappointed. But I don’t think that is the answer either. I think having proper expectations is the key to a happy life. I believe there should be some expectations that are attainable and some that keep you reaching always. But you need to know the difference.

Kathryn Hepburn said, “Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get – only what you are expecting to give.”

Quit expecting others to provide you happiness and joy. That can only be found in a relationship with Jesus Christ. Allow your expectations to be more about what you can do for others and not what they can do for you.

Proverbs 11:23 “The godly can look forward to a reward, while the wicked can expect only judgment.”

What are your expectations today?

Expect more of yourself than you expect of others, then you will not be disappointed.
