Are you Compassionate?

compassionCompassion is the word of the day. I want you to speak this word over your life today. Speak it over your family and your marriage.

Colossians 3:12 “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion,”

The scripture says, clothe yourself with compassion. The implication is that we can put it on or not each day. As you declare this word today, choose to clothe yourself with compassion.

What does that actually mean? And how can we really do this?

Compassion means that we recognize the suffering of others, then take action to help.

Bono (U2 )explains that the meaning of compassion for Christians is to focus on those in need. “To me, a faith in Jesus Christ that is not aligned with the poor … it’s nothing.”

The Bible defines the meaning of compassion in several ways.

Proverbs 31:8-9 says, we are to “speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves … defend the rights of the poor and needy”.

1 John 3:18 says, “Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth”

What does this mean for me and my marriage, or my family or my colleagues at work?

Do you see a need in any of their lives that you could help with? Be intentional today about those around you. I believe God will open your eyes and allow you to see a need that you have the ability to assist with.

You may ask, “Why do I want to get involved in other people’s lives. Shouldn’t I just mind my own business and hope others will do the same?”

Let me remind you of the scripture that we started with.

Colossians 3:12 “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion,”

It’s really not an option. However, I can promise you that if God opens the door for you to show compassion to another, it is because He is setting you up for a blessing. Remember, you reap what you sow. There will be a time when you need some compassion. Sow compassion today and reap compassion tomorrow.
