When I was an early teenager, my brothers and I were swimming in the creek down at my grandparents’ home on the farm in East Texas. We came to a place in the creek where it was a little deeper and looked a little spooky. My younger brother didn’t want to swim through it, he said, it looked like that’s where snakes would be. I said, “There aren’t any snakes in the water, I’ll prove it,” and started walking into the deeper water, only to be bit by a snake. Don’t worry, it didn’t kill me.
Recently, my wife was in the backyard in the swimming pool on a float and a wasp kept flying around. I said, “If you won’t bother it, it won’t bother you.” A few minutes later it stung her while she laid on her float minding her own business. Sorry babe. I guess they will sting you after all.
There will always be exceptions to the rule. There will always be things that don’t go according to the normal pattern. There are always circumstances that don’t fit the mold.
I think we make this mistake with God sometimes. We put God in a box and because He answered our prayer one way the last time, then we think, that must be the way He will answer next time. But God rarely answers the same way.
The Bible says that the children of Israel limited God.
Psalm 78:41 Yes, again and again they tempted God, And limited the Holy One of Israel.
Don’t put God in a box. Don’t limit God. Allow God to be God. He will exceed your expectations and go beyond your wildest imagination if you will let Him.
The word of the day is Don’t limit God.
