I’ve told you about “Redman,” the man who challenged me to bring church to the streets of Houston. So I accepted the challenge and started Friday night street services.
What I didn’t tell you, is that soon after we had started our services, I noticed that Redman was not there. I asked around and no one had seen him. The next morning I got up and started making my way through the crack houses and the abandoned buildings, looking for Redman. Finally someone told me they thought they saw him behind the building across the street.
As I searched behind the building I saw him curled up in the alley, lying up against the brick wall. His head was resting on his dog, named “Wounded Knee.” I called his name, there was no answer. I moved a little closer and called his name again. I heard a groan. As I reached over to help him up, I could see that his face was beaten and swollen. He asked me to help him up. As I did, he screamed in pain. I lifted him up to his feet and he fell into my arms. He looked toward an old plastic bag, still lying on the ground and said, “Give me the book,” I looked inside the tattered plastic bag and found the only book. It was a Bible that we had given him at the very first street service. Holding on to it tightly, he said, “As long as I have the book, I’ll be alright.”
By the next Friday night “Redman” had been shot on the streets of Houston. But he found the value of the Word of God and most importantly, everlasting life through Jesus Christ.
The word of the day is the “Word.” God’s Word.
Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
You can’t go wrong following the Word of God.
