Starla and I were talking about an event that happened many years ago. I couldn’t remember any of the details. I didn’t remember what was said. I didn’t even remember everyone involved. But I did remember the way I felt, and that was not good.
That’s why the word of the day is encourage.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 ESV) “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.”
Someone once said, “You won’t always remember what people say or do, but you will remember how they made you feel.” (Similar quotes have been attributed to Maya Angelou and Carl Buehner and others.)
I believe this is very true. If so, how can we make others feel better?
5 Ways To Make People Feel Better About Themselves
- Ask them for advice- People need to know that their opinion matters. Simply ask others for advice. This gives you an opportunity to explore options and encourage others.
- Give them a compliment- This is easy. Compliment someone on their clothes, their work, their family and or their children. (People love it when you talk about their children.)
- Call them by name- Everyone loves the sound of their name. Be intentional about remembering people’s name.
- Actually listen to what they are saying- Ask a follow up question to their story. If someone tells you they are from the state of Oklahoma, ask them what city in Oklahoma are they from? Get creative with your follow up questions. It helps keep you engaged and make others feel better about themselves.
- Smile at someone- This doesn’t cost you a thing, but always makes people feel better.
Have a Better Day!
